In America, there is a highway called M-185.It is the only highway in America where cars are not allowed.Why would cars not be allowed on a highway… Isn’t that the point of a highway?The M-185 highway is located on Mackinaw Island.Mackinaw Island has golf courses, art exhibitions, and most importantly… no cars.
In 1898, the people of Mackinaw were so scared of cars that they passed a law banning them.This, however, did not include Mackinaw State Park.So, in 1900, a man named Earl C. Anthony brought his car to the state park to drive it around.The horses had never seen a car before.They got scared and crashed the wagon.After that all cars were banned from the island.
Even though there were no cars, the government built a highway there for bikes, wagons,and horses.Emergency vehicles are also allowed on the Island.There has only been one accident involving two cars on Mackinaw island.There was a fire and the fire truck and an ambulance crashed into each other on the way to the fire.It is okay though, there was an ambulance right there when the accident happened.
